The Boston Consulting Group (BCG): PhD and Post Doc. Presentation & Skills Session on Wednesday, 23 May – Central London

The consultancy firm BCG are keen to recruit PhD students and postdocs and have asked me to get the word out about an event they are running on May 23 specifically for this group.  Here are the details they’ve sent me:

Have you ever wondered what life outside academia looks like? How you could apply your intellectual curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills to make valuable contributions to the business world? How to keep expanding your knowledge, enhancing your skills, and advancing your career in a way and at a pace unmatched by most other companies?

Join us on Wednesday, 23 May to discover the answer to these questions, learn more about The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and meet several BCG Advanced Degree holders.

This presentation and skills session is specifically aimed at PhD students and post-doctoral researchers who are interested in pursuing a career with BCG.

During this event, we will talk about the firm and discuss opportunities in our global offices.  In addition, there will also be a skills session where we will offer some tips and advice on writing a successful CV and discuss what to expect during a typical consulting “case study” interview and how to prepare.  This will then be followed by an open Q&A session.

– Date: Wednesday, 23 May

– Location: The BCG London office (20 Manchester Square, London W1U 3PZ)

– Time: 6.30 – 8.30pm

To attend the presentation, please register your interest via the link https://www.113.vovici.net/se.ashx?s=13B2588B4ECE5495  by end of day on Tuesday 22 May.

Please note that space is limited. Once you register, we will send you a confirmation email.

If you are unable to attend but are still interested in a career in one of our global offices, or if you have any questions about this event, please contact us via email at UKInternationalRecruiting@bcg.com.

Partnership PhD Mobility Bursaries 2012-13 – deadline 22 May

These bursaries are worth looking into, especially for anyone planning an academic career. From a careers point of view they offer a great way of widening your academic network and learning about the way academia works in different countries. And an intellectually stimulating experience too!

Applications are invited from LSE PhD students for mobility bursaries to visit one of the School’s institutional partners (Columbia University, New York; The National University of Singapore (NUS); Peking University, Beijing; Sciences Po, Paris; or the University of Cape Town, South Africa) in order to work informally with an advisor on their PhD thesis, research and/or on related publications and presentations, and to introduce them to the academic culture, professional contacts and employment opportunities of another country/region.

For 2012-13, up to ten bursaries are on offer to visit one of the above five partner institutions. For any one partner institution, up to two flat rate bursaries of £2,500 are available.

Students registered for PhD studies at any LSE department and who have already been upgraded to full doctoral student status are eligible to apply. Each visit should be a minimum of two months and a maximum of three months in duration.

The deadline for submitting complete applications including references is midday on Tuesday 22 May. Full details about the Partnership Mobility Bursaries, including application procedures, can be found here. Any further enquiries should be emailed to academic_partnerships@lse.ac.uk.

Your New PhD Careers Adviser

Hello everyone. As the new PhD careers adviser for PhD students at LSE I thought I would resurrect this blog. I’ve now been in post for a few weeks, working two and a half days a week, and am enjoying settling in and finding my way around.

You may like to know that I am running 30 minute careers advice appointments on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 2 to 5pm. These are available to all PhD students at LSE to discuss any aspect of your career. To book one of these just email careers@lse.ac.uk.

For those of you who are interested in knowing a bit about me, I completed a degree and PhD in Chemistry at Edinburgh University. Following that I worked in science publishing as an editor for 5 years. Currently I work part-time here at LSE and part-time at Cambridge University, where I am a careers adviser for postdocs.

I’m looking forward to meeting some of you over the coming weeks.

London Doctorate Meet-Up!

A Clinical Research Fellow at UCL is organising a meet-up for PhD students within London. The idea is to get PhD students together to discuss all things related to progressing in your PhD.  Here is what the information says:

Would you like to meetup with other doctoral candidates and discuss progress, match milestones and motivate each other? Alternatively, we could moan about fickle experiments, supervisors, writers block, journal bias and all sorts!

For more information and to see the London Doctorate blog, click here.
